Barcelona Tourist Tax Update: Overnight Charges set to Rise Yearly to 2029
Travellers heading to Barcelona should prepare for higher accommodation bills, as the city's tourist tax roughly doubled following rate hikes introduced in April 2026. The tax—officially listed on receipts as impost sobre estades en establiments turístics—combines a regional Catalonia levy with a Barcelona municipal surcharge of €5 per person per night.

Current Nightly Rates

The total tax is collected directly by properties at check-in or check-out, rather than included in the initial booking price. Current combined rates per person, per night stand at:
5-Star, Grand Luxe & Luxury Campsites: €12.00
Tourist Dwellings / Holiday Apartments: €9.50
4-Star & 4-Star Superior Hotels: €8.40
Other Establishments & Campsites: €7.00
Youth Hostels: €6.00
Cruise visitors stopping in Barcelona also face per-call charges: €11 for stays under 12 hours, and €9 for stays of 12 hours or longer. Rates carry an additional 10% VAT, which is typically included in the final charged figure.

Exemptions and the Seven-Night Cap
Children under the age of 16 are fully exempt from the tax. Additionally, the charge only applies to the first seven consecutive nights of a stay at the same establishment, making the eighth night onward tax-free. However, splitting a two-week stay between different hotels resets the seven-night counter. Long-term rentals of 32 nights or more are classed as residential lets and are completely exempt.
Future Increases

Barcelona's municipal surcharge ceiling has been capped at €8, with plans to add €1 each year through 2029. Consequently, a night in a 5-star hotel is projected to rise to around €13 in 2027, €14 in 2028, and roughly €15 by 2029. A quarter of all generated tax revenue is earmarked for local housing initiatives.
Practical Advice for Visitors
Because third-party booking sites and hotel portals generally exclude the tax from listed room rates, visitors should budget for the extra payment upon arrival or departure. While most hotels take credit cards, smaller guesthouses or tourist apartments may require cash. Furthermore, holiday flat licenses in Barcelona are scheduled to expire by November 2028, making it essential to verify an apartment's registration status when planning long-term trips.
