Major overhaul of Barcelona tourism infrastructure

Barcelona City Council is rolling out a major sustainability initiative aimed at decentralising tourism, improving visitor mobility, and enhancing green practices across the city. Backed by €40,848,876 secured from the 2022 Plan for the Modernisation and Competitiveness of the Tourism Sector and funded via NextGenerationEU funds, the Tourism Sustainability Plan for Destination Barcelona (TSPDB) introduces around 20 targeted projects.

Key goals for visitors and locals

Barcelona invests over 40 million euros into sustainable tourism and decentralisation

The city's ambitious strategy focuses on shifting tourist traffic away from over-congested spots to create new experiences across different neighbourhoods. City officials are targeting six major objectives:

  • Decentralising tourist attractions: Creating fresh content grounded in Barcelona's culture, creativity, and local heritage to spread visitor interest across the city.

  • Promoting sustainable mobility: Improving eco-friendly transport options aligned with the wider urban transit system.

  • Improving energy efficiency: Upgrading systems to mitigate climate change impacts connected to tourism.

  • Digital transition: Accelerating full digitalisation for tourist services and destination management.

  • Fostering sustainability: Harmonising the tourist experience with resident life while raising environmental awareness.

Travellers visiting Barcelona can look forward to richer cultural offerings outside traditional hotspots and smoother, greener options for moving around the destination.
