Contemporary Art and Pop Sculptures

Among the key public stops is L.O.V.E., also known as the Finger, created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. Located in Piazza degli Affari right in front of the Milanese stock exchange at Palazzo Mezzanotte, the name stands for Freedom, Hate, Revenge, Eternity. Another striking piece is Needle, thread and knot (Ago, filo e nodo) by Pop artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, positioned at the Piazzale Cadorna transit hub to symbolize local industriousness. In Piazza Meda, visitors can see Arnaldo Pomodoro's 1980 bronze sculpture, the Solar Disc (Disco Solare or Disco Grande).

Historic Landmarks and Classical Works

The city's historical heritage is on display at the Castello Sforzesco courtyards (including Cortile delle Armi, Cortile della Rocchetta, and Corte Ducale), where visitors can view outdoor archaeological artifacts, architectural remnants, coats of arms, friezes, and tombstones. Nearby in Parco Sempione stands the Arco della Pace (Arch of Peace) at Piazza Sempione, built in 1806 to mark the marriage of Eugene de Beauharnais to Princess Augusta of Bavaria. The park's Triennale Garden holds Giorgio de Chirico's restored 1973 Metaphysical fountain sculpture, Mysterious Baths (Bagni Misteriosi).

Horse lovers and history buffs can view Leonardo's Horse at the Hippodrome (Ippodromo di Milano). Based on detailed 1482 drawings by Leonardo da Vinci for an uncompleted monument to Francesco Sforza, the replica was created by artist Nina Akamu. Architecture enthusiasts can admire Casa Galimberti on Via Malpighi in the Porta Venezia area, a famous Art Nouveau building designed by Giovanni Bossi between 1903 and 1905 featuring majolica tiles, wrought iron, and floral concrete motifs.

Modern District Parks and Waterfront Culture

For modern works, the ArtLine Milano project in the City Life public park presents an outdoor trail of more than twenty permanent installations created by artists under 40, set against skyscrapers designed by Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, and Arata Isozaki. Additionally, the Museum of Young Artists (Museo Giovani Artisti) displays works outdoors at the Idroscalo.
