Located near Trajan's Forum in a historic corner of Rome, the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto offers visitors a blend of Renaissance architecture, master art pieces, and rich local history. Originally a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto, the site was handed over to the Università dei Fornari (Guild of Bakers) in the late 15th century. To make space for a larger landmark, the original chapel was demolished, and construction on the new Renaissance edifice commenced in 1507.探索羅馬洛雷託聖母堂:特拉揚廣場旁的文藝復興建築與藝術雕塑指南

Architectural Highlights and Unique Features

Designed initially by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, the church was finished roughly seventy years later by Michelangelo's pupil, Giacomo Del Duca, who added its distinct dome and pre-Baroque bell tower. Later restorations were carried out in the late 19th century by Luca Carimini and Giuseppe Sacconi. Nearby, the matching church of Santissimo Nome di Maria al Foro Traiano was completed in 1741 by Antoine Dérizet.

Key architectural and artistic elements to look out for during a visit include:

Distinctive Dome: The main structure features a square brick base with Travertine limestone accents, crowned by an octagonal drum, an oversized dome, and an intricately designed lantern known as the "cricket's cage".

  • Grand Entrance: The main doorway is embellished with a sculpture group depicting The Virgin and Child with the Blessed House of Loreto by Andrea Sansovino.

  • Interior Design: The interior features an octagonal layout inscribed within a square, housing four semicircular chapels.

  • Master Artworks: Inside are two large 1630 paintings by Cavaliere d'Arpino depicting the birth and death of Our Lady, two sculpted Angels by Stefano Maderno, and a statue of St Susanna by Flemish sculptor François Duquesnoy carved between 1630 and 1633.
