Barcelona's Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya Displays Unseen Spanish Civil War Painting 'Wounded Militiaman'
Art enthusiasts visiting Barcelona can now view a rarely seen historic artwork at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. The exhibition features Wounded Militiaman, a powerful Civil War propaganda painting created by Francisco Mateos, on view from 7 May.
A Hidden Civil War Masterpiece

Painted to denounce the brutality of the Spanish Civil War and celebrate camaraderie among soldiers, the artwork was originally created to represent the Spanish Republic Pavilion at the 1937 International Exposition of Paris—the same prestigious venue where Picasso debuted Guernica. Following its return from Paris in 1938, the piece was kept out of public view throughout the Francoist dictatorship due to its political associations with the defeated side.
Understanding the Degradation and Recovery

Beyond its political history, the painting suffered severe structural decline. Mateos joined two separate canvases together to create a larger backdrop, utilizing poor-quality, precarious materials during a rushed production process. Over time, chemical reactions have caused the paint layer to continuously flake off, leading to irreversible damage that conventional conservation techniques cannot repair without compromising authenticity.
To preserve the delicate physical piece, the painting is kept under strict observation and displayed at a specific angle. To help visitors appreciate the artist's original vision, the museum has introduced AI-generated images alongside the display, reconstructing its initial visual appearance and restoring the full expressive power of Mateos's message.
