To mark the 200th anniversary of Empress Eugénie's birth, the Château de Pierrefonds is hosting a dedicated cultural season running until 15 November 2026. Situated in the forests of Picardy, the turreted neo-Gothic castle is celebrating its historic resident with themed programming and unprecedented public access.
Public Access to Private Imperial Quarters
For the first time, visitors can step inside the Empress's private apartments, including her personal bedroom located in the castle's newly erected towers. The opening of these spaces is marked by the return of official portraits of Empress Eugénie and Napoleon III. In 1857, Napoleon III commissioned architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc to restore the medieval fortress—originally dismantled under Louis XIII—creating a romantic neo-Gothic retreat that Eugénie strongly championed.

Themed Guided Tours
A series of curated guided tours highlights lesser-known aspects of Eugénie's life throughout the year:
April – June: Eugénie, un amour pour les fleurs explores her passion for botany.
July – September: Eugénie en son château! provides an insider look at her daily life at Pierrefonds.
October – December: Eugénie et les sciences occultes examines her interest in spiritism and the occult.

Special Events and Festivities
The landmark event of the season is the Week-end Impérial on 27–28 June. The weekend features military bivouacs, lawn croquet, theatrical vignettes, and the Saturday evening Bal de l'Impératrice. Taking place in the Cour d'Honneur, the full-dress imperial ball includes waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and a champagne bar. Period dress is recommended, and tickets are priced at €30.
Additional scheduled events include:

19–20 September: European Heritage Days offering access to typically restricted areas of the castle.
Halloween: A late-night spiritism theatrical experience presented by Au bord des mondes.
Late November onwards: A Nutcracker-themed Christmas installation to close out the year.
