Japan has a word, "monozukuri," expressing deep respect for artisan craftsmanship and the spirit of making things with care. There is no better way to take that spirit home than a souvenir you made yourself. When visiting Tokyo in June, escape the crowded souvenir shops and join small-group craft workshops at Mont Blanc, Tsukada Kobo, and Seikyodo, turning a rainy day into a tangible memory.

Founded in 1960, Mont Blanc is a long-established handmade umbrella workshop that still uses the labor-intensive "tokiori" hand-weaving technique. The 1–1.5 hour session lets you choose from about 10 Japanese-pattern fabrics, then cut, sew onto the frame, and assemble your own mini umbrella. Instruction is mainly in Japanese but demonstration-led, so you can follow along. Umbrellas symbolize "warding off evil" and "wishing happiness" in Japan, making your handmade mini umbrella a meaningful good-luck gift.

Tsukada Kobo: Craft a Kimekomi Sumo Wrestler Doll

Located between Tokyo Skytree and the Sumida River, Tsukada Kobo specializes in Edo kimekomi dolls. Founded in 1841 by Haruyama Nakawa, it is now in its seventh generation. The kimekomi technique originated in 18th-century Kyoto and was refined in Edo (now Tokyo); today it is recognized as a traditional craft technique by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

In the 1–1.5 hour session you will dress a sumo wrestler figure using the same kimekomi technique as the artisans—trimming along grooves with a wooden spatula, applying glue, and pressing fabric into place. Simple English assistance is provided. At the end, the craftsman helps you compose a kanji name and writes it on a wooden plaque; the finished doll comes with a mini dohyo (sumo ring) for display.

Seikyodo: Make Your Own Gamaguchi Purse

"Gamaguchi" coin purses take their name from the metal clasp that resembles a frog's mouth—frogs symbolize "money returning" in Japan. Seikyodo opened in 2022 in Kappabashi as the physical store of the web magazine "Shokunin Zukan," and is within walking distance of Sensoji Temple.

With simple English assistance, choose from 10–15 Japanese fabric scraps (the artisans call each encounter "ichigo ichie," a once-in-a-lifetime meeting). No sewing is required: cut, fold, press, and glue the fabric, then attach the gold clasp. You will make two items—a slim pouch, pen case, or glasses case as your main piece, plus a mini gamaguchi keychain for practice—in about one hour.
