Coffee in Barcelona and tapas at the Alhambra: a new AVE connects the two cities first thing in the morning

An imminent reorganisation of rail services will let travellers cross the peninsula from early morning and reach the Catalan capital just in time for the afternoon.

There are mornings when the sky still holds that cold, still dawn light as the city begins to stir, getting ready to start its day. From 14 September, that early awakening will be accompanied by a key change on the platforms: Granada will add an AVE high-speed connection heading to Barcelona first thing in the morning.

To fit this new route onto the map, Renfe has decided to adjust the timetables of several of the services that usually link the two cities. It is precisely this operational reorganisation that will let passengers start their day in the south and end their journey stepping onto Catalan tracks just past midday.

A new clock for passengers

Under this update, the new timetable has passengers bidding farewell to Granada station at exactly 7.55am. From that moment, the high-speed train covers the route without interruption until its official arrival at Barcelona Sants at 2.54pm.

The debut of this morning train is not an isolated move, but part of a logistical adjustment by the company. To make room for this new early departure, the operator will reconfigure the frequencies of various trains currently running on the corridor linking the two capitals, reorganising the daily service that connects both cities.
