Founded about 160 years ago by Miizumi Jozan, Jozankei Onsen takes on a different charm after dark. Warm, Japanese-style lantern light illuminates the traditional streets, while glowing lanterns line the slopes once frequented by inn attendants and geishas. The cool mountain breeze adds to the relaxing atmosphere of an evening walk.
One of the highlights is Jozan Onsen Park, where around 200 lanterns create a breathtaking display of light. Visitors can relax in a footbath fed by natural hot spring water while enjoying the softly flickering lanterns. Surrounded by rising steam and the soothing sounds of the Toyohira River, guests can experience a uniquely tranquil side of Jozankei.
Another must-see is Iwato Kannondo, a temple hall with about 90 years of history. About 100 donated lanterns illuminate the grounds, creating a serene and enchanting atmosphere. Wander through the historic hot spring town, enjoy local cuisine, soak in Jozankei's renowned hot springs, and spend an unforgettable summer evening.
