Schedule for the 2026-2027 (46th) Event

The official schedule and guidelines for the 2026-2027 event were announced in March and July. Each venue operates on a slightly different timeline, so checking the dates in advance ensures you do not miss your favourite displays.

*   Odori Venue: Runs from 20 November 2026 to 25 December 2026. Lighting hours are typically from 16:30 to 22:00, with an extension until 24:00 during the Christmas period from 23 December to 25 December.

*   Ekimae-dori Venue: Runs from 20 November 2026 to 11 February 2027. Lighting hours are usually 16:30 to 22:00, extended to 24:00 from 23 December to 25 December.

*   Minami 1-jo-dori Venue, Akapla Venue, and Sapporo Station South Exit Venue: Run from 20 November 2026 to 14 March 2027. Standard lighting hours are 16:30 to 22:00, except for the Sapporo Station South Exit Square venue, which operates from 16:30 to 24:00. Start times may adjust depending on the sunset.

*   Nakajima Park Venue (New for 2026-2027): Scheduled for early January to late January 2027, with exact dates and production details to be announced by the official website in late October.

Looking back at the previous 45th event in 2025, the Odori venue concluded on 25 December, the Ekimae-dori venue lasted until the Sapporo Snow Festival in February, and the Minami 1-jo-dori, Akapla, and Sapporo Station South Exit venues continued until mid-March. This structured arrangement means travellers can still enjoy several illuminated sites even after Christmas.

Venue Highlights and Attractions

The event spans multiple locations, each providing a distinct visual experience.

Odori Venue (Main Venue)

For the 46th event, the main venue occupies Odori Nishi 3-chome to 5-chome, featuring different illumination themes for each chome. Nishi 1-chome and 2-chome host the simultaneous Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo. Specific production contents for each chome are determined closer to the event, following previous displays like wish birds and snow gift objects.

Ekimae-dori Venue

Street trees are gorgeously decorated along a 1.5-kilometre stretch running from JR Sapporo Station to Susukino.

Minami 1-jo-dori Venue

Forty-six ginkgo trees are illuminated with over 70,000 LEDs, creating a magical 300-metre path of light.

North 3-Square (Akapla) Venue

With the former Hokkaido Government Office building as a backdrop, old ginkgo trees in the square are lit up to present a dramatic landscape.

Sapporo Station South Exit Square Venue

Hosts the Satsueki Illumination, where visitors can enjoy synchronized sound and light productions.

Nakajima Park Venue

Situated right outside Nakajima Park Station on the Nanboku Subway Line, this newly added venue offers light displays framed by snowy park scenery.

Special Event: Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo

Held at Odori Nishi 1-chome and 2-chome, the 25th Munich Christmas Market runs concurrently from 20 November 2026 to 25 December 2026. Inspired by Sapporo's German sister city Munich, the market offers authentic German food, wine, and festive merchandise, including traditional ornaments, hot mulled wine (Glühwein), German sausages, and Stollen.

Environmental Initiatives

The objects at the main Odori venue utilise partial self-generation power. The event incorporates biodiesel fuel produced from recycled waste cooking oil collected from households, highlighting its focus on sustainability.

Practical Tips

*   Admission: All venues are completely free to enter, allowing anyone to wander through and view the displays freely.

*   Access: Travelling by subway is the most convenient option. The Odori venue is a short walk from Odori Station, while the Ekimae-dori and other venues are within walking distance from Sapporo Station and Odori Station.

*   Best Viewing Time: The lights look most magical and dreamlike between 17:30 and 18:30 after the sun has completely set.

*   Weather and Operations: Lights generally remain on regardless of weather, though operations may halt temporarily during severe conditions like strong winds for safety reasons.

*   Transport Advice: While paid parking lots exist nearby, winter road conditions can be hazardous, making public transportation the recommended choice.

*   Family Travel: Prams can navigate the paved walkways easily, but visitors should prepare thorough cold-weather gear since Sapporo winters are extremely cold.
