As Japanese brands expand overseas, they keep using Tokyo as a testing ground, opening innovative stores with fresh, multifaceted services.

Blending novelty with traditional Japanese culture, the global flagship stores of Japan's best-known brands have become hybrid playgrounds that are both hugely entertaining and a window into Japanese culture. Here are three of Tokyo's newest global flagship stores and what makes each one special.

Kura Sushi Global Flagship Harajuku — "The World's Most Photogenic Sushi Restaurant"

Where Japanese tradition meets Tokyo pop culture, and where a conveyor-belt sushi chain lands in the youthful energy of Harajuku, Kura Sushi once again teamed up with art director Kashiwa Sato under the concept of "the world's most photogenic sushi restaurant." The result is a flagship that blends dining with entertainment, built to satisfy Gen Z's urge to snap and share. A wall of rainbow lanterns greets you in the entrance hall, while semi-open wooden seats framed by ukiyo-e prints of Edo-period food culture set a warm Japanese tone — and make the futuristic "sweets yatai" at the center pop. An automatic crepe machine turns out springy yellow-and-pink crepes on the spot; enjoy them as a savory meal or dessert at the standing counter overlooking Harajuku's lively streets, or on the open terrace with views of Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree. Back at your seat, order easily from a multilingual tablet menu — and have your camera ready for the moment the sushi plates race to your table.

UNIQLO Ginza — 12 Floors of Everyday Wear, 12 Interactive Shopping Experiences

The UNIQLO global flagship "UNIQLO Ginza," on Ginza 6-chome, reopened in 2021 with a renewed focus on presenting everyday "LifeWear" in an authentic yet beautiful way, under the slogan "New Life, New Wear, New GINZA." It's a hybrid theme park for shopping, dining, and relaxing. Beyond the large pendulum display on the first floor, you'll find the "UTme!" corner for making original T-shirts and tote bags, the "INTIMATE WEAR SALON" (a Ginza-store first) for women seeking better-fitting innerwear, and the "CUSTOM ORDER SALON" for suit beginners preparing for formal occasions — each with dedicated staff for personalized service. The biggest talking point is the "UNIQLO COFFEE" space on the 12th floor, offering high-quality coffee at affordable prices alongside sweets created with a long-established Ginza wagashi shop. The window-side lounge at the back of the 12th floor is the perfect spot to sip coffee while gazing at the Ginza streetscape. Before leaving, don't miss the UT corner on the 11th floor — snap a photo at the "UNIQLO PHOTO BOOTH" and pick up a tote bag made in collaboration with famous Ginza shops as a souvenir.

DAISO MARRONNIER GATE Ginza — Japanese Culture, Craftsmanship, and Kawaii in One

Marking its 50th anniversary, the well-known 100-yen shop DAISO opened a global flagship in Ginza's "MARRONNIER GATE GINZA 2" in 2022, bringing together all three of its brands — "DAISO," "Standard Products by DAISO," and "THREEPPY" — under one roof. At "DAISO," you can buy everyday goods for 100 yen and get a feel for Japan's seasonal cultural events through the displays. The sub-brand "Standard Products by DAISO" ranges from 330 to 1,000 yen, stocking affordable essentials like camping gear while also collaborating with renowned Japanese craftsmen — from Tokyo stationery maker Hokusai Pencil to Imabari towels from Ehime Prefecture — on high-quality lifestyle items, complete with business-card-sized info cards you can scan to learn each product's story in multiple languages. In contrast to the calm, understated "Standard Products," the neighboring "THREEPPY" takes a colorful route at around 300 yen, filling the lives of adult women with cute, bright accessories, tableware, and kitchen goods.
