Bali's Goa Jepang: Klungkung Village Revives a 'Sleeping' WWII Cave Heritage Site

The Goa Jepang (Japanese Cave) rest area in Banjarangkan Village, Klungkung Regency, Bali, was bustling on the afternoon of Saturday, 15 August 2026, as hundreds of villagers poured in after a community fun walk celebrating Indonesia's 81st Independence Day.
The walk actually started from the Banjarangkan village office. The village government (Pemdes) deliberately set the finish line at the Goa Jepang rest area to bring the "sleeping" tourist site back to life.
Village head Anak Agung Gde Indrawan Diputra said the event was one of the village government's strategies to promote and revive the potential of the Goa Jepang cultural heritage area.
"This is the second time the village has held a fun walk, after the last one three years ago on the same occasion (Independence Day)," Indrawan told reporters at the event on Saturday, 15 August 2026.
Indrawan admitted that the rest area facilities and the Goa Jepang site need regular crowds to avoid looking neglected. Through this event that mobilised residents on a massive scale, he hopes public attention will return to this historic destination.
According to detikBali's on-site observation, the festive mood was already felt from 2:30 pm (WITA, Central Indonesian Time) when the start flag was raised. Participants arriving at the Goa Jepang finish line were treated to 1,000 free portions of nasi jinggo, a traditional Balinese rice wrap.
The cave, usually quiet, was now packed with children. They posed for selfies with their families while gazing in awe at the colonial-era historical site.
The atmosphere warmed up further with a Zumba session led by Koming and Dian Tanjung. The villagers' joy continued with a Gek Serli performance, followed by a music show by YS Bali.
Villagers' enthusiasm peaked at the lucky draw, with prizes ranging from smartphones, mountain bikes, gas stoves, blenders, and irons to rice cookers.
Through this blend of recreational sport and popular entertainment, the Banjarangkan village government hopes the Goa Jepang rest area will gradually revive and be seen once again as one of Klungkung's main public spaces.
