Can You Still Have a Digital Detox Vacation in Bali? 3 Top Retreats to Switch Off

There was a time when a two-week vacation meant being completely unreachable by the folks back home, for better or worse.

Back then, you would wait for your holiday photos to be developed and printed, then proudly show them off to friends and family in a beautifully bound album.

With smartphones and constant connectivity now woven into daily life, the team at The Bali Sun found ourselves wondering: is it even possible to take a completely offline vacation in Bali anymore?

Strictly speaking, that is a bit of a rhetorical question, because the answer is a resounding yes. While travelling around Bali is certainly easier when you are connected online, and while everything from bookings and payments to messaging and navigation has gone increasingly digital, it is still very possible to disconnect in order to reconnect while on the island.

There are simple and more intensive ways to go offline in Bali. The most basic is to switch off your phone the moment you check into your hotel and go fully analog. If you know you will be tempted to start scrolling, you can ask hotel staff to lock your devices in the safe. For travellers who need a little more support and want a more serious digital detox, there are a few destinations worth considering.

Bali Silent Retreat is one of the most acclaimed retreat spaces on the island. An eco-sustainable nature sanctuary, it strips life back to the basics and gives guests the chance to switch off from the outside world and turn fully inward for a period of introspection, rest and restoration.

Bali Silent Retreat offers 20 different programmes, and while many guests check in for a week or so of prayer and meditation, it is not a faith-based facility.

It describes itself as a 'silent sanctuary for prayer and meditation,' and its team is clear that it is 'not vipassana, not a religiously supported ashram, no guru, no dogma.' Guests can check in for as little as one night, though most feel that five to ten days is best to truly slow down and let the space work its magic.

If you only want to experience Bali Silent Retreat for a day, day passes are available and include access to daily wellness programmes, an organic garden-to-table buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the chance to explore every corner of the sanctuary, from labyrinth walking and the crystal circle to Holy Water Meditation, the medicine garden, the crying bench, star-gazing beds and the library.

Travellers seeking an even more supported digital and health detox are spoilt for choice in Bali. At Ayurvedagram Bali in Tegallalang, just outside Ubud, a healing hotel and retreat space offers a comprehensive set of Ayurvedic healing programmes.

Ayurvedagram Bali offers accessible packages, including a dedicated Detox & Rejuvenation Retreat.

The team explains that the Detox and Rejuvenation Retreat Package is highly personalised and mindfully crafted, combining classical Ayurvedic detox therapies, time-honoured yoga asanas, pranayama and restorative meditation techniques to completely balance and rejuvenate body and mind.

No conversation about retreats and digital detoxes in Bali would be complete without mentioning Fivelements Retreat in Mambal. Its signature Panca Mahabhuta Retreat helps guests find harmony through traditional Balinese Hindu healing wisdom, rooted in balancing the five elements of nature: Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether.

Designed specifically to combat burnout and stress while supporting spiritual reconnection, emotional healing and inner calm, it is easy to see why this is one of Bali's most in-demand and highly acclaimed retreat facilities.
