When Will Notre-Dame's New Stained-Glass Windows Be Installed? A December 2026 Reveal
Six new stained-glass windows designed by artist Claire Tabouret are set to be installed at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, with a public unveiling expected in December 2026.
The project was born from a desire to leave a mark of the 21st century on a monument that has spanned centuries. Commissioned by the French state and President Emmanuel Macron, and approved by the Archbishop of Paris, Mgr Laurent Ulrich, these six contemporary windows will soon take their place inside the cathedral.
Standing seven metres tall, the windows designed by Claire Tabouret depict the "descent of the Holy Spirit" — the biblical scene of Pentecost. Parisians have already had a preview through an exhibition at the Grand Palais.
Philippe Jost, president of the body responsible for Notre-Dame's conservation and restoration, told AFP that the windows will be installed in October–November so that everything is ready for an unveiling in December. The public can therefore expect to see the new works from December 2026. Jost stressed that the transformation is truly part of the cathedral's history — Notre-Dame has been modified throughout its long life to carry the mark of each era.
Tabouret's windows will replace the geometric "grisaille" glass chosen by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century. Mark your calendars for the end of 2026.
