North West Bali Trail Launches in October, Connecting Travellers With Authentic Island Life

Astungkara Way is among a small handful of Bali businesses leading the regenerative agriculture and tourism movement on the island.

Named by National Geographic readers as one of the "Best of the World" for wellness, Astungkara Way is making another pioneering move this October.

Based in Badung Regency, Astungkara Way is on a mission to turn Bali into the world's first regenerative island. It's no small goal, but this dedicated and experienced team is pushing the boundaries of what's possible — one step at a time, quite literally.

The company's tourism experiences are grounded in education and authentic culture. At the farm, visitors take part in hands-on regenerative farming activities and leave with a deeper appreciation of farming, its importance, and Balinese culture.

Since 2020, Astungkara Way has been building Bali's first regenerative walking trails. Part pilgrimage, part invitation, these trails guide travellers through the island's living landscapes and into areas seldom seen by tourists.

Working with local communities, the team has mapped out routes that offer a rare glimpse into Balinese culture and terrain — the signature being The Astungkara Trail.

That 10-day expedition runs only a few times a year, meaning fewer than 50 people set foot on the route annually. It's a coast-to-coast journey of self, community, nature and regeneration.

This October 2026, Astungkara Way will build on that success with the launch of The North West Bali Trail. Over four days, the route covers 18.5km of living landscape, weaving together forests, farms, mangroves, reefs and genuine connection with local communities.

Across the four days, travellers follow ancient forest paths and snorkel while learning about reef restoration. They'll harvest, cook and share meals with local farming families, and plant mangroves that protect Bali's fragile coastline.

As The Bali Sun has long highlighted, North West Bali is one of the island's least explored — and most diverse — regions.

While rapid development has spread deeper into central and southern Bali, the north west has a completely different feel. West Bali National Park was formally established back in 1941 to protect the critically endangered Bali Starling.

The journey runs four days and three nights, from West Bali National Park to Pemuteran Village, which the UN World Tourism Organisation named among the world's best tourism villages in 2026.

What sets the North West Bali Trail apart is its marine element. While the Astungkara Way Trail is a coast-to-coast experience, the North West Bali Trail is the team's first expedition to take guests beneath the water.

On day three, guests set off on a sunrise boat trip in search of North Bali's famous dolphins, snorkel off Menjangan Island, then return to shore for a restorative yoga Nidra session at the ocean's edge.

Guests also take part in talks and hands-on learning run by Astungkara Way's partners Biorock Indonesia, who are working to restore coral reef ecosystems across Indonesia, including Bali.

Founder Tim Fijal said: "I mean, it was time. It's been since 2020 when we first started designing our cross-Bali trail. It's been wonderful, but it's time to expand, connect with new local partners, and see new places and terrains in Bali. It's really special for Astungkara Way because until now we really haven't had a connection with marine landscapes and coastal areas. So for us, this is a really exciting way to explore new connections with the land."

The first North West Bali Trail runs in October, with a maximum of just 9 guests per group.
