Though Tokyo is famed for its neon streetscapes and cutting-edge culture, many places still preserve these legends. This guide takes you to yokai-themed cafés and historic neighborhoods where countless folktales were born, exploring the mystical, folkloric side of this ancient city.

Step into the World of "GeGeGe no Kitaro" at Kitaro Chaya

Kitaro Chaya sits quietly on Tenjindori, just outside Chofu Station and close to Jindaiji Temple, where visitors can fully immerse themselves in the world of "GeGeGe no Kitaro." This beloved Japanese yokai manga was created by Shigeru Mizuki, who lived and worked in Chofu for more than 50 years. The shop sells T-shirts, mugs, and all kinds of merchandise that Kitaro and yokai fans will love, along with character-designed soft serve, float drinks, and other takeaway treats. The café across the street serves parfaits, fried doughnuts, and desserts inspired by the yokai that appear in the series — the "Kitaro Latte" is especially recommended, with ten different character latte-art designs to choose from. A multilingual QR-code menu is also available. Nearby is "Kitaro Hiroba," a Kitaro-themed children's park, and bronze yokai statues can be found all around. Kitaro Chaya is both a beloved photo spot for manga fans and a perfect place to take a break on your journey.

Discover the Legend of Yuki-onna at the Showa Retro Museum in Tama

Yuki-onna, the Snow Woman, is a yokai that has long fascinated Japanese people. Legend says she has a ghostly pale, beautiful face and appears on snowy, stormy nights, dressed in a flowing white kimono, freezing travelers with her icy breath. The city of Ome in the Tama area of western Tokyo has an unexpected connection to this legend: according to local folklore, the city is believed to be the setting of the 1904 English story "Yuki-onna" by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo). The Showa Retro Museum houses vintage wrapping paper, miniature street models, old cameras, and cigarettes, and upstairs there is a modest exhibition room dedicated entirely to the Snow Woman legend. It displays newspaper clippings, books, photos, paintings, and even English picture books, so visitors can enjoy the exhibit even without knowing Japanese. In this quiet tatami room, you can learn the Snow Woman legend in depth while also glimpsing everyday life and nostalgic charm of Japan's Showa era.

Tetsugakudo Park: Where Philosophy Meets Yokai

Located in Tokyo's Nakano Ward, Tetsugakudo Park is a one-of-a-kind hidden gem in the city. Its name means "the park where you experience philosophy." It was founded in 1904 by Enryo Inoue, a Meiji-era philosopher, founder of Toyo University, and the father of yokai studies. Hoping to make philosophy part of everyday life, Inoue filled the park with elements related to yokai. At the entrance stands the "Yokai Gate" (Tetsurimon), flanked by statues of a tengu and a ghost. Inside you'll find the "Ghost Plum" and the remains of the "Tengu Pine," said to have been spared from felling because it was protected by a tengu. The park contains 77 spots in total, including the eerily named "Dokuro-an" (Skull Hermitage) and "Kishinkutsu" (Demon God Cave). Ghost-story events are held in summer, and English guided tours are being gradually introduced, with multilingual QR codes planned for the future. A special once-a-month guided tour (Japanese only) takes visitors through historic buildings normally closed to the public, such as the library known as "Absolute Castle." Quiet and off the beaten tourist path, Tetsugakudo Park is a distinctive free attraction for anyone who wants to dive deeper into Japanese yokai culture.
