The year is 79 AD. In a quiet city near Naples, life goes on as normal: work, baths, spectacles, taverns... until, in an instant, Mount Vesuvius awakens. What followed was one of the most famous tragedies of ancient history, burying Pompeii under a blanket of ash for centuries. IDEAL Montjuïc now hosts the immersive experience 'The Last Days of Pompeii', revealing the secrets of daily life in the city and the natural disaster that brought about its end.

The climax comes in the virtual reality room, where — aboard a chariot and amid the crowd's cheers — visitors take part in gladiator battles and naval clashes in the city's amphitheatre.

Next, 360º projections carry visitors from the calm cobbled streets to the very moment the eruption of Vesuvius unleashes chaos on the city. But the immersion goes a step further thanks to the metaverse, which turns visitors into virtual avatars to roam freely through the famous Villa of the Mysteries.

Pompeii, the tragedy that froze time

This is the great paradox of Pompeii: the catastrophe that destroyed it is the very thing that allowed it to survive the passage of time. The layer of volcanic ash left by the eruption of Vesuvius protected the city from looting and decay — which is why Pompeii remains in an exceptional state of preservation.

Thanks to excavations begun in the 18th century, we now know much of the urban layout and daily life of Ancient Rome. And now, a fragment of that history can be visited in Barcelona.
