Must-See Museums & Attractions
Hagia Sophia
Among Istanbul's most iconic historic sites, the Hagia Sophia's massive, transcendent interior is breathtaking. Completed in the 6th century on the orders of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, it remained the world's largest cathedral for nearly a millennium. Its most striking features are the magnificent dome — still considered an architectural marvel — and the Byzantine mosaics adorning its walls, depicting bygone emperors and representations of Christ.
Topkapı Palace Museum
The former residence of Ottoman sultans, now housing priceless imperial treasures.
Blue Mosque
The Sultanahmet Mosque, better known as the Blue Mosque for the prominent blue hues of its majestic interior, was built in the early 17th century. Situated opposite Hagia Sophia, it remains a functioning mosque — visiting is not permitted during prayer times.
Basilica Cistern
One of Istanbul's most intriguing attractions, this underground wonder was built by Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century to store up to 80,000 cubic metres of water. Supported by hundreds of Ionic and Corinthian columns, it famously features two column bases emblazoned with the upside-down head of Medusa. The cool, dark underground complex is also a brilliant escape from the summer heat.
Istanbul Archaeology Museums
Established in the late 19th century as Turkey's first museum, this treasure trove is divided into three sections: Archaeology, Ancient Orient, and Islamic Art. It holds a vast collection of Ancient Greek, Roman, and Turkish artefacts. Arrive at opening time — a full day is needed to explore its expansive collection.
Gülhane Park
Located next to Topkapı Palace, this is one of Istanbul's largest and most beautiful parks. Thousands of tulips bloom here during springtime, making it a welcome green sanctuary within the dense old city.
