Just 1 Hour from Madrid: Spain's Most Spectacular Medieval Festival Returns with Castle Battles and Human Chess

From August 7 to 16, the town of Consuegra travels back to the Middle Ages with an extensive programme of stunning activities and an artisan market.

Now in its 30th year, this festival transforms a picturesque Toledo town into the stage for one of Spain's most spectacular historical reenactments — with a programme that goes far beyond the usual fare for such events. This year's edition recreates the Battle of Consuegra of 1097, in which King Alfonso VI — aided by 300 knights sent by El Cid and commanded by his own son, Diego Rodríguez — fought against the Almoravid troops of Yusuf Ibn Tashufin.

The core events are concentrated over three days: August 14 to 16. The first — the historical reenactment 'El Fonsado Castellano' — immerses visitors in the moments leading up to the battle, with Consuegra Castle as the breathtaking backdrop. The second — 'As-Satrany: The Game of Armies' — is a spectacle that recreates the battle through a game of human chess, with Death removing pieces from the board one by one. After the match, a funeral ceremony and a performance of the Dance of Death follow.

Ticket Information

Three ticket types are available for Consuegra Medieval:

- General Admission: €18 — includes access to 'El Fonsado Castellano' and shuttle bus to Cerro Calderico
- Special Ticket: €20 — includes 'El Fonsado Castellano', shuttle bus, and 'As-Satrany'
- Chess Performance Only: €6 — entry to the human chess spectacle

Practical Information

Organisers recommend wearing comfortable shoes for the 'El Fonsado Castellano' reenactment. Given the scale of the event and the fact that activities take place across different locations, arriving early is strongly advised. Castle-based activities are accessed via shuttle bus.
