Bali Museum to Close for Renovation from August 10, Reopening Expected by End of November

The Bali Museum (Museum Bali) will close to visitors starting Monday, August 10, 2026. Located on Jalan Mayor Wisnu in Denpasar, this historic museum is set to undergo extensive renovation work expected to last until the end of November.
Ida Ayu Made Sutariani, Head of UPTD Museum Bali, explained that three buildings will be renovated: the Buleleng, Tabanan, and Karangasem halls. "We will be replacing the roofs of these buildings with new ijuk (palm fibre)," she told detikBali on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
According to Sutariani (affectionately known as Dayu), visitors will not be able to tour the museum during the renovation period. However, the administrative office, library, and research services will remain open to the public.
Dayu emphasised that the renovation must not alter the building materials or design in any way. This is because the museum — originally conceived by W. F. J. Koon, the former Assistant Resident of South Bali — is classified as a suspected cultural heritage site (objek diduga cagar budaya). "The building materials and dimensions must stay exactly the same," she stated.
A budget of Rp 5 billion (approximately HK$2.5 million) has been allocated for the renovation. When the Bali Museum reopens, it will unveil a brand-new exhibition theme, offering visitors an entirely refreshed experience at one of the island's most important cultural institutions.
