August is knocking on the door, and Tokyo's first weekend of the month is packed with summer excitement. Alongside the spectacular firework displays lighting up the capital, traditional Bon Odori dance festivals are springing up across the city — some kicking off even earlier in the week. These festive gatherings are the perfect excuse to slip into a yukata, learn a few Bon Odori moves and immerse yourself in one of Japan's most beloved summer traditions.

Tsukiji Hongwanji Noryo Bon Odori

July 29 – August 1

No Tokyo summer is complete without a festival, and Bon Odori stands out as one of the most enchanting. What began as a ritual to honour ancestral spirits has blossomed into a joyous, all-ages celebration held in neighbourhoods across the metropolis.

Running from July 29 through August 1, the Tsukiji Hongwanji edition ranks among Tokyo's most-visited Bon Odori events. Slip into a yukata and join the circle of dancers swirling around the central yagura tower — sessions run nightly from 7pm to 9pm (shifting to 6pm–8.30pm on Saturday).

First-timer? No problem — just shadow the locals beside you. Bonus: the festival neighbours the legendary Tsukiji Market, so arrive with an empty stomach and work up a serious appetite before diving into the food stalls.

Nakano Bon Odori Festival

August 1–2

Most Bon Odori events in Tokyo unfold in the early evening, but the Nakano edition — held directly outside Nakano Station — gets going around 10am with live music and dance showcases. The headline programme kicks in at 4.40pm, featuring celebrity guests including the wildly popular sento idol group Junretsu, plus DJs spinning J-pop sets.

Sunshine City Bon Odori

Don your yukata and make for Ikebukuro's Sunshine City, now hosting its 47th annual Bon Odori dance festival. The outdoor celebration unfolds around a six-metre-tall yagura turret decked out in colourful paper lanterns, all to the thunderous pulse of live taiko drumming.

Beginners can mirror the professional dancers stationed at the top of the turret. Throughout the evening you'll witness beloved regional dances like Tokyo Ondo and Otsuka Monogatari Ondo — a genuine window into local folk culture.

Ten food stalls line the venue alongside a kids' matsuri game zone offering free shateki target shooting and superball scooping. The festival runs daily from 7pm to 9.15pm at Sunshine Hiroba, the rooftop plaza of Sunshine City's Alpa shopping complex.

Ebisu Station Bon Odori

July 31 – August 1

Join the throng dancing to the irresistible beat of taiko drums at Ebisu's Bon Odori, now in its 71st year. This long-running summer staple draws enormous crowds to the spacious plaza just outside Ebisu Station's West Gate.

Over two days, a towering yagura stage takes over the taxi and bus zone — the whole area goes car-free so festival-goers can move and groove freely. Food stalls cluster near Shake Shack, accompanied by a kids' arcade and a kakigori (shaved ice) stand. Think crispy fried gyoza, cucumber on a stick and ice-cold desserts — all the summer matsuri classics in one place.
