Everyone knows about the bamboo grove in Arashiyama, but venture just beyond central Kyoto and you will discover the Otokuni Bamboo Grove area — a hidden sanctuary where you can savour the serenity of towering bamboo without the crowds.

What Is the Otokuni Bamboo Grove?

Situated southwest of Kyoto City, the Otokuni Bamboo Grove area spans the cities of Muko and Nagaokakyo and the town of Oyamazaki. This region has been celebrated for centuries for its high-quality bamboo, and the landscape reflects that heritage: elegant bamboo fences line the streets, delicate bamboo crafts appear everywhere, and vast living groves form an integral part of daily life.

This was once the site of Nagaoka-kyo, Japan brief capital from 784 to 794. Historic shrines, cultural treasures, and ancient pathways still dot the landscape. Best of all, it is remarkably accessible — just 15 to 20 minutes by train from JR Kyoto Station.

Must-Visit Bamboo Spots

Muko Bamboo Path (Take-no-Michi)

The crown jewel of the area is the Muko Bamboo Path, a breathtaking 1.8-kilometre walking route through towering bamboo stalks that form a lush green canopy overhead. Sunlight filters through the leaves, dappling the path in shifting patterns. Compared to Arashiyama, the atmosphere here is noticeably calmer and more relaxed — even during peak season, you will have room to breathe and take photos at your own pace. The decorative bamboo fences lining the route, handcrafted by local artisans, are an attraction in themselves.

Kyoto City Rakusai Bamboo Park

At the end of the Bamboo Path sits Rakusai Bamboo Park, where visitors can admire bamboo groves and learn about traditional bamboo craftsmanship in the on-site museum. A must for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Oharano Shrine

Often called "Kyoto Kasuga Taisha," this lesser-known shrine at the foot of Kyoto western mountains is a local favourite for seasonal flowers: cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in early summer, and spectacular autumn foliage.

History and Culture in Nagaoka-kyo

Nagaoka Tenmangu Shrine

This historic shrine honours Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning, and is renowned for its stunning kirishima azalea bloom in spring. The red blossoms encircle Hachigo-ga-ike Pond, creating a tunnel of scarlet that draws photographers from across Japan. Every season brings new beauty — lush greenery in summer, colourful maples in autumn, and serene stillness in winter.

Asahi Group Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art

This extraordinary destination blends art, architecture, and nature. The original English-style villa from the early 20th century has been meticulously restored, while modern exhibition spaces designed by the acclaimed architect Tadao Ando create a striking dialogue between old and new. Inside, you will find Claude Monet Water Lilies series — one of the museum greatest treasures. The gardens offer sweeping views of the Kyoto Basin and surrounding mountains.

Getting There

All major attractions are conveniently located along the JR Kyoto Line and Hankyu Kyoto Line. From Kyoto Station, you can reach the area in just 15-30 minutes. The Muko Bamboo Path is a short bus ride from JR Mukomachi Station or Hankyu Higashi-Muko Station. Nagaoka Tenmangu Shrine is within walking distance of JR Nagaokakyo Station or Hankyu Nagaoka-Tenjin Station. The Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art is a short walk from JR Yamazaki Station or Hankyu Oyamazaki Station.

Next time you are in Kyoto, skip the crowds and discover the Otokuni Bamboo Grove — where swaying green groves, ancient shrines, and elegant gardens reveal a side of Kyoto every bit as beautiful as the city itself.
