The Hokkai Heso Matsuri — literally the "Hokkaido Belly Button Festival" — takes over Furano every July 28 and 29 with over 50 years of history behind it. The premise is as playful as it sounds: roughly 4,000 dancers paint expressive faces across their stomachs, transforming their torsos into living, bopping characters you won't see anywhere else on Earth.
The star of the show is the "Zubara" dance, where bellies become vibrant canvases that come alive with every hip shake and shuffle. Taiko drums pound, street-food stalls fill the air with the scent of grilled Hokkaido specialties, and — best of all — visitors are welcome to paint up and join the parade themselves.
Furano sits at the geographical centre of Hokkaido, and the festival honours the spirit of the region's pioneers with equal parts irreverence and community warmth. If you're in Hokkaido in late July, this is the kind of memory that outlasts any postcard.
