When most people picture winter in Kyoto, they imagine snow-dusted temples and quiet, lantern-lit streets. But head two hours north to the Sea of Japan coast and you'll find a completely different side of the ancient capital — one defined by legendary crab and steaming hot springs. This guide covers the best ryokans for Taiza crab cuisine, day-trip onsen spots in the Tango and Ayabe regions, and a ready-to-use 2-day itinerary for the ultimate cold-weather getaway.

Luxury Crab Dining & Ryokan Stays

Northern Kyoto Prefecture is dotted with inns that take seafood seriously. Here are five standouts for winter crab and warm hospitality.

Kasyouen Bettei Fuka

This adults-only ryokan features three exclusive floors — Usui, Rikka, and Taisho — each with a distinct aesthetic and sweeping views. Rooms pair modern Japanese design with private open-air baths. Meals highlight seasonal flavours from the Tango and Tajima regions, served in a dedicated dining space.

Shizuka Hanaogi

Perched above Yuhigaura Bay, Shizuka Hanaogi delivers floor-to-ceiling sea views and a soundtrack of lapping waves. The kaiseki dinners draw heavily on Tango's seafood bounty, best enjoyed after a long soak in the onsen.

Aburaya Bekkan Nagomitei

Sitting on a hilltop overlooking the Sea of Japan, Aburaya offers open-air baths fed by free-flowing hot-spring water and a 24-hour public bath. Dinner — seasonal seafood and Tajima beef — is served course by course in the privacy of your room. The famous Ine Boathouses are just 8 minutes away.

Hotel Jukaitei

The crown jewel for crab lovers. Jukaitei caps capacity at eight groups per day. The owner personally bids at Taiza Port's fish market, guaranteeing the freshest catch. In winter, that means the elusive Taiza crab — often called "phantom crab" for its rarity — prepared by a master seafood chef. The inn sits on Tango's highest hill, with views to match the food.

Kaikatei Hanagozen

Known for its tatami-lined corridors that invite barefoot wandering, this 46-room inn offers ocean-view baths and an effortlessly relaxed atmosphere. Rooms with private open-air baths are available for those who want their soak with a side of privacy.

Day-Trip Onsen in Tango & Ayabe

Ukawa Onsen Yoshino-no-Sato

Two baths, two vibes: the "Sea Onsen" faces the Japan Sea horizon, while the "Mountain Onsen" nestles in a bamboo grove. The baths rotate daily between men and women. On-site restaurant and accommodation make it viable for longer stays too. Open 11:00–21:00 (Apr–Nov), 12:00–21:00 (Dec–Mar). Closed Thursdays and 1st/3rd/5th Wednesdays.

Ayabe Onsen (Nio-no-Yu)

Surrounded by the forests of Ayabe Kanbayashi, this mineral-rich natural spring also features a medicinal bath infused with herbal blends. Open 10:00–21:00 (last entry 20:30). Closed 2nd and 4th Mondays.

Yasaka Ashiginu Onsen

A day-trip-only onsen on a hilltop overlooking the Yasaka Plain. Eco-conscious to boot: it runs on recycled tempura oil and wood-chip fuel. Open 10:00–22:00 daily except Wednesdays; Sunday morning baths available March–November from 7:00.

Kumihama Onsen Yumotokan

A crowd-pleaser with capacity for 100 bathers, featuring indoor, outdoor and herbal baths fed by free-flowing spring water. Cherry blossoms in spring, snowscapes in winter. Open 9:00–21:00, year-round.

Chie-no-Yu (Wisdom Bath)

Right next to Amanohashidate Station, this is Miyazu City's only outdoor bath — named in hopes of bestowing wisdom and health on visitors. Indoor, outdoor, hand and foot baths available. Open 12:00–21:00, closed Wednesdays and alternate Tuesdays.

The Perfect Winter Itinerary: "Crab & Steam"

Day 1: Coastline, Culture & Crab

Start at Amanohashidate, walking the pine-covered sandbar before warming up at Chie-no-Yu right by the station. Lunch on local seafood, then drive north along the coast to the Ine Boathouses for a postcard-perfect seaside pause. Check into a ryokan like Aburaya or Shizuka Hanaogi by evening. Dinner is a multi-course kaiseki built around fresh crab and local sake.

Day 2: Onsen Hopping Homeward

After a Japanese breakfast, head west to Kumihama Onsen Yumotokan for a late-morning soak in the sprawling outdoor bath. On the drive back toward Kyoto city, make one last stop in Ayabe for a medicinal bath that refreshes body and mind before you hit the highway.

The Bottom Line

Northern Kyoto is rugged, authentic, and comes alive when the temperature drops. Whether you're chasing the phantom Taiza crab or a quiet soak in a snow-fringed open-air bath, Kyoto by the Sea in winter delivers memories that warm you long after you've returned home. Pack a heavy coat, bring an empty stomach, and head north.
