Legend has it that releasing sky lanterns is a way for the Lanna people to express their culture, customs and way of life. The Lanna people believe that by lighting and releasing sky lanterns, they can pay homage to the Buddha in the heavens, blessing the Lanna people with peace and happiness!!
Highlights of the Chiang Mai CAD Yi Peng Lantern Festival:
Visual Feast: Chiang Mai will present a spectacular visual feast that will dazzle your eyes!!
A Pilgrimage of a Lifetime: If you must attend one religious ceremony in your life, come to Chiang Mai! The Yi Peng Lantern Festival will be an unforgettable experience!!
A Gift for Love: The Yi Peng Lantern Festival is Thailand's most beautiful festival, bar none — the most beautiful festival for the most beautiful her!!
Regret If You Miss It: If you don't see it in this lifetime, you will surely regret it: Chiang Mai's Yi Peng Lantern Festival!!

◇◆ Spirit Gate (Ying Shen Gate): 1‑2 days before the Yi Peng Lantern Festival, the ancient Lanna people and the present‑day Chiang Mai people are accustomed to placing at their doorways, temple gates, company entrances or any other places an archway built with banana leaves, sugarcane and various auspicious flowers. The archway is decorated with many ancient lanterns and native Thai flowers, resembling a gate to the forest, hence we call this archway the "Spirit Gate". As the Lanna people believe in listening to monks preach Buddhist teachings, the forest archway is built to welcome the Buddha, who travels from the forest to the bustling city, and wherever there is a "Spirit Gate", He will go there!!
◇◆ Candle Lights: As the Lanna people believe that lighting candles is a way to pay homage to and show gratitude for those people and things that have shown them kindness, such as doors, walls, windows, staircases, etc. At the same time, the Lanna people believe that the light of candles can bring wisdom to people's hearts and guide them to move forward. Therefore, during every Yi Peng festival, in addition to releasing sky lanterns, lighting candles has also become one of the Lanna people's rituals of worship. The whole city surrounded by candle lights is a kind of magical beauty!!
