Product Details
Zaanse Schans is a famous tourist destination in the Netherlands, located 15 kilometres north of Amsterdam. It is not only an open‑air conservation area where people still live, but also a living open‑air museum that vividly showcases Dutch life in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Zaan district, where Zaanse Schans is situated, was the first industrial area in the world. 250 years ago, over 800 windmills stood on this small piece of land, performing various industrial tasks such as sawing wood, pressing oil and grinding pigments. The American Declaration of Independence was written on paper produced in the Zaan district. Nowadays, although most of the windmills have been dismantled, a few are still preserved and open to visitors.
Windmills are the highlight of Zaanse Schans. There are 5 windmills still operating in traditional ways, with 3 open to visitors, including De Kat for grinding fuel, De Bonte Hen for pressing oilseeds and De Hadel for drainage. These windmills have unique shapes and different functions. Visitors can enter the windmills to observe the huge gears and mechanical devices up close and feel the charm of ancient power machinery.202601151144-l5jurk5l1i.jpg
Besides windmills, there are also many traditional Dutch handicraft workshops. In the wooden shoe factory, craftsmen demonstrate the process of making wooden shoes on site, from logs to beautifully painted clogs. Every step showcases the wisdom and skills of the Dutch. In the cheese workshop, visitors can taste various flavours of Dutch cheese and experience the unique food culture of the Netherlands. In addition, there are shipyards, pewter shops, etc., with traditional handicraft performances every day.
The architecture at Zaanse Schans is also very distinctive. Colourful old wooden houses are built along the canals, with green, blue and red facades reflected in the clear water, creating a picturesque pastoral scene together with the white wooden bridges. Museums in the village include the Bakery Museum and the Clock Museum, allowing people to gain an in‑depth understanding of Dutch history and culture.202601151144-qw1do3djrd.jpg
In terms of transportation, take a train from Amsterdam Central Station, get off at Koog ‑ Zaandijk station, and walk for 15 minutes to reach the windmill village. Entry to the windmill village is free, but visiting the museums and windmills requires a small fee.
Overall, Zaanse Schans attracts visitors from all over the world with its unique windmill culture, traditional handicrafts and beautiful pastoral scenery. It is an excellent place to experience Dutch history and culture.
