Taiping Mountain National Forest Recreation Area is located in Datong Township, Yilan, covering an area of 12,631 hectares. It is renowned for its misty forests and rich ecology. Admission fees are charged in tiers: full‑price tickets are NT$150 on weekdays and NT$200 on holidays; military personnel, police, students, seniors, and children are eligible for half‑price or concessionary tickets. After 4:00 PM, the hot spring area offers a special starlight ticket at NT$50. The park features numerous highlights, including the 900‑metre Jianqing Historic Trail, which is flat and easy to walk, surrounded by pristine forests and stunning sea of clouds; and the Cuifeng Lake Loop Trail, which offers a different charm in each season—spring brings fresh greenery, summer offers misty rains, autumn presents colourful foliage, and winter showcases snow‑covered landscapes.
A must‑try experience is the Forest Bum Bum Train, which runs along the old timber transport tracks, emitting a distinctive "bum bum" sound as it travels through the woods. At Jhihze Hot Spring, visitors can soak in the hot spring or boil eggs while enjoying the relaxing embrace of the forest. Other attractions include the precious Hinoki virgin forest trail and the season‑limited beech forest trail in autumn and winter, offering surprises at every turn. The park is open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM on weekdays, with opening hours extended to 4:00 AM on holidays and during summer vacation. Whether for a day trip or a two‑day visit, visitors can experience the unique charm of nature intertwined with nostalgia, making it an ideal destination for families, couples, and hiking enthusiasts.

Taiping Mountain is rich in precious timber. In the past, it was listed alongside Alishan and Baxian Mountain as one of Taiwan's three major forest logging sites.

The Bum Bum Train, hot springs, alpine lakes, giant tree forests, and national treasures have together shaped the long heritage of Taiping Mountain National Forest Recreation Area, spanning over a century.

Driving along Cuifeng Forest Road, where Formosan rock macaques and Mikado pheasants are often spotted, the route ends at Taiwan's largest alpine lake.

The Cuifeng Lake Loop Trail encircles Taiwan's largest alpine lake and was built along the route of former timber transport tracks. Its scenery changes dramatically from dawn to dusk and varies with each season.
