Attraction Highlights
Goryokaku Tower is located in Goryokaku‑cho, Hakodate City, Hokkaido. Opened in 2006, the tower stands 107 metres tall, and its 90‑metre‑high observation deck is twice the height of the original, making it an iconic tourist attraction in Hakodate City, open year‑round. Inside the tower, visitors can explore the history of Southern Hokkaido and the Hakodate War through exhibits, including a bronze statue of Toshizo Hijikata and a completed model of the Goryokaku fort. The tower's lighting changes its theme colours according to seasonal landscapes, natural scenery, or traditional events. Visitors can also challenge themselves by climbing the 451 emergency stairs, usually closed to the public, to reach the second floor of the observation deck, and witness major local events. From the observation deck, one can take in the full star‑shaped view of Goryokaku Park, Mount Hakodate, the Tsugaru Strait, and the Yokotsu Mountain range, with distinctive scenery both day and night.

Panoramic View of the Star‑Shaped Fort from 90 Metres High: The observation deck offers a bird's‑eye view of the unique star‑shaped Goryokaku Park, while also encompassing the Hakodate cityscape, the Tsugaru Strait, and distant mountain ranges. Enjoy a clear city view by day and a dazzling sea of lights by night, offering an exceptionally expansive vista.

Themed Variable Lighting: The tower's lighting changes its theme colours based on seasonal landscapes, natural scenery, or traditional events. Visiting at different times of the year allows you to encounter uniquely atmospheric light shows, adding extra fun and memorable significance to the night view experience.
Special Experience of the 451 Emergency Stairs: Experience climbing 451 emergency stairs, usually closed to the public, from the first floor to the second floor of the observation deck. Not only does it challenge your physical stamina, but it also offers a unique ascent experience completely different from taking the lift.

In‑depth Exploration of Southern Hokkaido's History: The tower houses a wealth of historical exhibits, including artefacts related to the Hakodate War, a bronze statue of Toshizo Hijikata, and a model of the Goryokaku fort. Visitors can gain a deep understanding of the development history of Hokkaido and the Hakodate area, offering both sightseeing and educational value.
Witness Major Local Events: As an important landmark in Hakodate, this is an excellent spot to witness major local events. Visitors can participate in or watch these events, immersing themselves in the local customs, culture, and festive atmosphere of Hakodate.
