▼Hase‑dera Temple (Stop approx. 60 mins)

Hase‑dera Temple is one of the most iconic of its kind. Gazing out at the distant sea from amidst the hydrangea blossoms, one realises that the ocean truly can wash away all worries. In autumn, there is also an unmissable Japanese dry landscape garden at Hase‑dera. Unlike other temples and shrines in the city, it enjoys an excellent location backed by mountains and facing the sea. Throughout the temple grounds, you can see a variety of statues. The temple enshrines a standing eleven‑faced Kannon statue, approximately 9 metres tall, which is the largest wooden Buddha statue in Japan. Hase‑dera Temple is also known as the "Temple of Flowers" and is the most famous spot in Kamakura for viewing hydrangeas. Another seasonal highlight is the autumn foliage – many Japanese people visit especially to admire the red leaves here, making it one of Kamakura's most representative autumn foliage viewing spots. ▼Komachi‑dori (approx. 60 mins)

Komachi‑dori, which stretches from Kamakura Station to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, is one of Kamakura's most famous and lively old streets. Lining both sides of the street are many shops selling all kinds of little trinkets. With a wide variety of Kamakura specialities, Japanese handicrafts, and local cuisine, it is hugely popular with both locals and tourists alike. Among these shops are many famous eateries featured on major websites and guidebooks. Don't miss them as you stroll through.

A hugely popular spot on Xiaohongshu for dog lovers – a trendy pet cafe where Shiba Inus earn their own treats (admission not included: 880 yen, includes one drink, 30 minutes; entry times at 00, 15, 30, 45 – every 15 minutes)

According to legend, Enoshima was first formed in the 13th year of Emperor Kinmei's reign (552 AD), when sand began to well up from the seabed, and after 21 days, a sandy island emerged. However, at Enryaku‑ji Temple on Mt. Hiei, there is a different, more romantic tale about the island's origin. The story goes that long ago, around Tsumura (present‑day Kamakura), there was a great lake spanning 40 ri, and in it lived a five‑headed dragon. It wreaked havoc, causing landslides, epidemics, floods, and typhoons. Unable to stop its evil deeds, the village fell into ruin. This led to the formation of Koshi‑goe (present‑day Koshigoe, opposite Enoshima). One day in the 13th year of Kinmei's reign, dark clouds suddenly gathered over the sea, and the heavens shook. A beautiful goddess appeared from the clouds, and then an island rose from the sea. The dragon fell in love with the goddess at first sight, vowed to mend its ways, and proposed to her. Through its relentless efforts and good deeds, it eventually married the goddess. From then on, the five‑headed dragon, along with the deities, transformed the island and protected the people living there. It is also said that the dragon was an incarnation of Benzaiten. Even Tokugawa Ieyasu is said to have visited to pay his respects. During the Edo period, it became one of the popular sightseeing spots for people from Edo (present‑day Tokyo). And because of Benzaiten's musical talents, it has also long been a sacred place for Kabuki actors.

Enoshima Shrine

Enoshima Shrine was founded in the 13th year of Emperor Kinmei's reign (552 AD), with its regular festival held in early April. The temple's wooden seated figure of the eight‑armed Benzaiten with polychrome colouring, the tachi sword by Fujiwara Masahiro of Hizen Province, the eight‑direction gazing tortoise, the Enoshima Engi (temple history), and the bronze torii gate are all precious national designated cultural properties. Benzaiten is also revered as the goddess of wealth, drawing many worshippers and tourists. Beside it, the legendary "Senkin Byakuryu‑o" (money‑washing white dragon king) is said to bring financial fortune when coins are washed in the pure water here.

Enoden (Enoshima Electric Railway) Experience (approx. 10‑15 mins) Experience fee included

The Enoden is a streetcar connecting Fujisawa to Kamakura. Its route covers most of Kamakura's famous attractions and offers beautiful views of the Shonan coastline. When it comes to Kamakura, the Enoden is an indispensable mode of transport. The sight of the train speeding by frequently appears in Japanese films and anime. So beyond just watching from afar, you can also experience the joy of riding the Enoden yourself.

▼Kamakura High School (Stay 30 mins)

Kamakura High School is located in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and is the real‑life inspiration for Ryonan High School in "Slam Dunk". The intersection near the station is the filming location for the iconic scene where Hanamichi Sakuragi greets Haruko Akagi. Standing at the crossing, listening to the ringing crossing bells, you can feel the passionate youthful memories of Slam Dunk. Years have passed, yet people still can't help but take photos here, as if commemorating their own youth.

I feel that what we go to witness is not just a memory. The sea, the school, and those streets from the Slam Dunk scenes are so significant to every post‑80s generation. Being able to visit a place from our youthful memories, as if to feel a fleeting breath of youth, gives us one more reason to say goodbye.

Stroll along the Shonan Coast beach and listen to the sound of the waves

Cross the railway crossing and the road, and descend the stairs to reach the famous Shonan Coast in the Kanto region. It is a paradise for surfers and beach lovers. Walk along the sand, listen to the waves, and relax. On clear days, you can even see Mt. Fuji. Additionally, the area frequently appears in Japanese travel shows, TV programmes, and films.
