▼Kotoku‑in Great Buddha (Kamakura Daibutsu) (30‑min stop)

The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a bronze seated statue of Amitabha Tathagata located within Kotoku‑in, a temple of the Jodo (Pure Land) sect in the ancient city of Kamakura. Commonly known as the Kamakura Daibutsu, it is a symbol of the ancient capital of Kamakura. The statue stands 11.3 metres in height, 13.35 metres including the pedestal, and weighs approximately 121 tonnes. Cast in 1252, the Buddha features a relatively flat facial profile, a low ushnisha (protrusion on the crown of the head), and a forward‑leaning posture, reflecting the style of Song Dynasty Buddhist statuary popular during the Kamakura period. It is a representative sculpture of the Kamakura era and has been designated a Japanese National Treasure. Unlike the Great Buddha at Todaiji in Nara, which underwent numerous repairs in later periods, the Kamakura Daibutsu has largely retained its original form, making it extremely precious.

Minamoto no Yoritomo established the first samurai government, the Kamakura Shogunate (1192‑1333), in Kamakura. During this 140‑year period, Kamakura served as the political, economic, and cultural centre of the entire country and experienced tremendous development. However, with the establishment of the Muromachi Shogunate as the central authority, Kamakura was sidelined and began to decline. In particular, after the Battle of Koga in Shimousa Province in 1455 (Kosho 1), Kamakura regressed to the point of becoming a mere farming and fishing village. It was not until the mid‑Edo period, with the revival of shrines and temples, that Kamakura gradually evolved into one of Japan's major tourist destinations. The Enoden is a tramway connecting Fujisawa and Kamakura. Its route covers most of Kamakura's famous attractions and offers beautiful views of the Shonan coast. When it comes to Kamakura, the Enoden is an indispensable and iconic mode of transport. The sight of the train speeding along frequently appears in various Japanese films and anime. Therefore, you can not only admire it from afar but also personally experience the joy of riding the Enoden.

▼Kamakura High School (20‑min stop)

Kamakura High School is located within Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It is the real‑life model for Ryonan High School in the manga/anime "Slam Dunk". The intersection not far from the station is the filming location for the classic scene where Hanamichi Sakuragi greets Haruko Akagi. Standing at the intersection, amidst the ringing of the crossing bells, you can feel the passionate youthful memories of Slam Dunk.

Even after all these years, people can't help but take photos at this spot, as if commemorating their own youthful days.

I think what we go to witness is not just a memory. The sea, the school campus, and the streets from the Slam Dunk scenes are so significant to those born in the 1980s. Being able to visit a place from our youthful memories, as if to feel a fleeting breath of our youth again, gives us one more peaceful reason to finally say goodbye to it.

Scenic Drive Along Shonan Coast (Not included in the itinerary; viewing from the vehicle only)

The Shonan Coast is the little train slowly chugging through Kamakura's quaint, historic streets; it is the sound of waves rolling on the beach as you lie on the sand; it is the sea breeze felt as motorbikes roar past; it is Sakuragi's devotion to Haruko; it is nostalgia; it is passion.

▼Enoshima Island (Approx. 110 min)

Regarding the original formation of Enoshima, it is said that in April 552 (13th year of Emperor Kinmei's reign), sand began to emerge from the seabed, and after 21 days, a sandy island was formed. However, records at Enryaku‑ji Temple on Mount Hiei contain a more charming legend about the island's creation. The legend tells that long ago, the area surrounding Tsumura (present‑day Kamakura City) was a large lake spanning 40 ri (approx. 160 km) in circumference, inhabited by a fearsome five‑headed dragon. It wrought destruction, causing landslides and earthquakes, spreading disease, and unleashing floods and typhoons. The people were unable to stop its evil deeds, and the village fell into ruin, forming Koshigoe (present‑day Koshigoe, opposite Enoshima). Then, on a certain day in the 13th year of Emperor Kinmei's reign, dark clouds suddenly gathered over the sea, and the heavens and earth shook. A beautiful celestial maiden appeared from within the clouds, and suddenly an island rose from the sea. The dragon fell in love with the maiden at first sight, pledged to stop its evil ways, and reformed itself, proposing to the maiden. Through its unwavering efforts and continuous good deeds, it eventually married the maiden. From then on, the five‑headed dragon, along with the gods, developed the island and protected the people living there. It is also said that this dragon was an incarnation of Benzaiten. Even Tokugawa Ieyasu visited to pay his respects. During the Edo period, it became one of the popular sightseeing spots for the people of Edo (present‑day Tokyo). Also, due to Benzaiten's musical talents, the area has long been a popular destination for Kabuki actors.

Enoshima Shrine

Enoshima Shrine was founded in 552 (13th year of Emperor Kinmei's reign), with its regular festival held in early April. Within the shrine grounds, the coloured wooden eight‑armed Benzaiten seated statue, the tachi (long sword) by Fujiwara no Masahiro of Hizen Province, the Hachiman Hemi (eight‑direction glaring turtle), the Enoshima Engi (origin chronicles), and the bronze torii gate are all precious nationally designated cultural properties. Benzaiten is also worshipped as the deity of wealth and fortune, attracting many worshippers and tourists. Adjacent to the shrine, there is the famous "Senzoku Byakuryu" (Money‑Washing White Dragon), where it is said that washing coins in the clear water brings good fortune.

▼Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine (70‑min stop)

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, formerly known as Kamakura Hachimangu, was the central object of faith and the guardian deity of the samurai during the Kamakura Shogunate period (1192). It has deep ties with the first Shogun of Kamakura and is quite famous throughout the Kanto region. Along with Iwashimizu Hachimangu (Kyoto) and Usa Hachimangu (Oita Prefecture, Kyushu), it is collectively known as one of Japan's Three Great Hachimangu Shrines. The shrine grounds are extensive, with several areas designated as National Historic Sites. Additionally, many flowering plants are cultivated within the grounds, making it a renowned local spot for cherry blossom and autumn foliage viewing. It has also been awarded a one‑star rating in the Michelin Green Guide.

Komachi‑dori

Komachi‑dori, stretching from Kamakura Station to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, is a renowned and bustling old shopping street in Kamakura. Lined with numerous shops selling all sorts of trinkets and goods, it offers a wide variety of Kamakura specialities, Japanese handicrafts, and local cuisine, making it popular with both locals and tourists. Many of these shops have gained recognition as famous eateries on various websites and guidebooks. As you stroll along, be sure not to miss them.

Depart and return to central Tokyo. The return time is for reference only and may be earlier depending on the smooth progress of the day's itinerary, favourable traffic conditions, or other factors.
