Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Korean: 강원특별자치도 / Gangwon teukbyeol jachido) is a provincial-level administrative region of South Korea located in the east-central part of the Korean Peninsula, with its capital in Chuncheon. Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province is a tourist destination in South Korea. Three Korean national parks—Seoraksan National Park, Odaesan National Park, and Chiaksan National Park—are located within Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. Nami Island in Chuncheon is the filming location of the Korean drama 'Winter Sonata' and is also an important destination for Hallyu tourism. Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province is also a ski resort in South Korea, with nine ski resorts built. It has hosted the 1999 Asian Winter Games, the 2009 Biathlon World Championships, the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games, the 2018 Winter Olympics, and the 2024 Winter Youth Olympics.
