Nikkō City is located in Tochigi Prefecture, an area densely rich in national treasures and World Heritage sites, often described as "one sight of Nikkō is worth a thousand of Japan." Tōshō-gū is the shrine of Tokugawa Ieyasu, featuring exquisite carvings of the "Three Wise Monkeys" and the "Sleeping Cat," resplendent in gold. Together with Futarasan Shrine and Rinnō-ji Temple, they form a World Heritage complex. Lake Chūzenji offers picturesque lakeside scenery, while Kegon Falls (one of Japan's three great waterfalls) cascades with majestic force. Kinugawa Onsen is a renowned hot spring in the Kantō region. Local cuisine is best represented by Nikkō yuba (deep-fried tofu skin), Nikkō unagi (eel), yuba-donburi, chestnut rice, Nikkō wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets), and onsen tamago (hot spring eggs), all rich in regional flavour.
