Sydney Art Scene: Key Galleries and Exhibitions to Visit
Sydney features a diverse gallery scene ranging from large national institutions to independent spaces. Travellers exploring the city can visit several major venues showcasing international and local works.

Art Gallery of New South Wales
Located a 15-minute walk from the city centre in parklands overlooking the harbour, the Art Gallery of New South Wales attracts over two million visitors annually. It houses permanent collections of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and hosts the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes. In 2022, the gallery expanded with the Sydney Modern Project, adding the sustainably designed Naala Badu building connected by a public art garden, which features contemporary exhibitions, site-specific art spaces, a column-free gallery and a gallery for time-based art. Visitors can also join State of the Art small-group tours. Onsite dining options include Crafted by Matt Moran and MOD Dining.

Museum of Contemporary Art Australia
Situated at Circular Quay near the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Museum of Contemporary Art holds a collection of over 4,500 artworks dedicated to living artists, with more than a third represented by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. The venue offers educational programs, online exhibitions and daily free guided tours. Visitors can dine at Canvas restaurant located on Level 4.

White Rabbit Gallery and Carriageworks
In Chippendale, the White Rabbit Gallery displays 21st-century Chinese contemporary art inside a former 1940s Rolls-Royce service depot. Admission is free, and the gallery is located near Chinatown and Spice Alley. Nearby in Redfern, Carriageworks operates as a multi-arts centre housed in a historic railway workshop, featuring an artist-led program and a weekly on-site farmers market.
