Zoo Map:

What special animals can I see at Taronga Zoo Sydney?

Taronga Zoo houses a wide variety of animals, including unique species rarely seen in other zoos:

Tree Kangaroo: The Matschie's tree kangaroo is native to Papua New Guinea. This arboreal kangaroo is adept at climbing trees and looks different from its ground‑dwelling relatives.

Platypus: The platypus is one of the few egg‑laying mammals. Taronga Zoo is one of the few zoos where you can see a platypus. It has a duck‑like bill, webbed feet, and a beaver‑like tail.

Quokka: The quokka is native to Rottnest Island in Western Australia. Known for being unafraid of humans, it is a favourite among many visitors.

Tasmanian Devil: The Tasmanian devil population has been severely impacted by facial tumour disease, leading to its listing as an endangered species. Taronga Zoo is actively involved in conservation efforts for the Tasmanian devil, which is known for its fierce nature and is also called the "Tasmanian Devil."

Sun Bear: The sun bear is the smallest member of the bear family. It has a black coat with a distinct patch on its chest, usually light brownish‑yellow or yellowish‑white in colour.

Sumatran Tiger: The Sumatran tiger is a critically endangered species. Taronga Zoo is one of the institutions involved in its breeding programme, and seeing a Sumatran tiger in person is a rare opportunity.

The above are just some of the animals housed at Taronga Zoo. Of course, you can also see koalas, lions, giraffes, tortoises, emus, hyenas, meerkats, and many more! This zoo brings together a rich array of wildlife from around the world, making it a must‑visit attraction for animal lovers.
