Highlights and Focus

The display brings together recent research, archaeological discoveries from Scotland, and loans from across Europe. Central exhibits include finds from a 2nd century AD Roman fort at Inveresk in East Lothian, home to the world's most northerly Mithraeum temple dedicated to the god Mithras. Two newly conserved altars from the temple will be on public display for the first time.

Visitors can also view artifacts such as a bowl from Inveresk dating to the 1st or 2nd century AD and a leaded bronze skillet with enamel from Linlithgow from the same period. The exhibition examines the community surrounding the military base at Inveresk, including soldiers, families, traders, craftworkers, and enslaved people, highlighting interactions between locals and invading groups.
