Rotterdam After Dark Captured by Local Artists

Commissioned by the Rotterdam City Archives and CBK Rotterdam under the theme 'night in motion', the three selected city artists spent recent months documenting the city's nocturnal life. All drawings displayed during the exhibition will eventually join the Rotterdam City Archives' permanent Rotterdam Collection.

Visitors will see distinct visual approaches across the collection:

  • Tessa Biemans: Presents pastel drawings featuring scenes such as crowded dancefloors, passing ambulances, and the moonlit Maas river, mixing daily life with shadowy figures.

  • Peyman Fazeli: Draws in pencil and charcoal on black paper, using street lamps, bright spotlights, and illuminated clouds to bring night scenes out of the darkness.

  • Steef Offerhaus: Uses collages made with pen, watercolour, and acrylic paint markers to depict various night communities, including taxi drivers, graffiti writers, fast food staff, and homeless individuals.

The city artist initiative dates back to before the 1940 Rotterdam bombing and continued through the post-war rebuilding era. The tradition was reinstated in 2018 by the Rotterdam City Archives and CBK Rotterdam. The jury for this edition included artist Pris Roos, representatives from CBK Rotterdam and the Rotterdam City Archives, N8W8 Rotterdam, and a Kunsthal Rotterdam curator.
