Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam Features Works by Jeff Koons and Alex Israel
Visitors to Rotterdam can explore works by American artist Jeff Koons and Alex Israel at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. The museum features the Baroque Egg with Bow (Orange/Magenta) created by Koons between 1994 and 2008. This giant Easter egg with a magenta bow measures six square metres, weighs two thousand kilos, and is part of a series of ten eggs made over fourteen years. Five of these works have a smooth surface, while the other five are Baroque Eggs resembling objects packed in crumpled foil. The egg on display in Rotterdam belongs to the latter series and is on loan from collector Bert Kreuk.

Artwork Details and Production

The creation of each egg required more than a year of work by several experts and utilized hand-applied layers of coating derived from the automotive industry to achieve a glossy effect. The design references themes such as rebirth and fertility. The artist Jeff Koons is known for enlarging everyday objects to giant proportions, merging high and low culture in works that recall Andy Warhol and his New York studio where more than eighty people work. His other well-known sculptures include Balloon Dog, Hanging Heart, and Diamond, which have previously been shown in venues such as Versailles in Paris, Neue National Galerie in Berlin, and the roof of The Metropolitan Museum in New York.

Exhibition History
The Baroque Egg with Bow was exhibited in the museum entrance area until August 24, 2012, after being unveiled in February 2012. Since June 2013, the work Sky Backdrop by Alex Israel has complemented the display. Both the works by Israel and Koons are on loan from collector Bert Kreuk. Visitors planning to visit the depot must book a time slot in advance, as entry is not permitted without one.
