Pointillism and Dutch Connections

Organised in collaboration with Museum Barberini in Potsdam, the presentation explores Signac's development of Pointillism. Building on Georges Seurat's techniques, Signac applied unmixed paint in dots and dabs using scientific colour theory, allowing the viewer's eye to blend complementary shades like orange next to blue or red next to green.
The exhibition features colourful landscapes, portraits, and harbour scenes. Highlights include:

Le Port au soleil couchant, Opus 236 (1892)
Le port de Rotterdam (1907), painted during his visits to the Netherlands
Works showing Signac's fascination with Dutch polders, ports, and skies in places like Amsterdam, Volendam, and Dordrecht
Broader Neo-Impressionist Circle

Beyond Signac's own creations, the exhibition highlights his influence as a writer, collector, mentor, and ambassador who spread Neo-Impressionism across Europe. Visitors can see how Dutch artist Jan Toorop (1858–1928) adopted his technique to introduce the movement to the Netherlands. Works by several of Signac's contemporaries are also on display, including:
Lucie Cousturier, Henri-Edmond Cross, and Curt Herrmann
Maximilien Luce, Camille Pissarro, and Georges Seurat
Théo van Rysselberghe and Jeanne Selmersheim-Desgrange
