Story Origin and Narrative Development
The musical *Haemongga* is adapted for the stage from the screenplay of *King of Sleep* (working title, original work by Ha Ki-ho), which was selected for the Korean Film Council's medium-budget Korean film production support project in 2026.
The narrative begins with historical records documenting King Jeongjo's insomnia. It expands into a two-actor historical musical traversing the boundaries between dreams and reality by introducing the fictional character Yu-gyeon. Yu-gyeon, a dream interpreter who possesses a quick wit and cheerful personality, enters the palace to treat Yi San, the Crown Prince suffering from severe insomnia and recurring nightmares caused by the trauma of witnessing his father's death.
As Yu-gyeon interprets Yi San's nightmares inside the palace in an effort to heal him, undisclosed secrets come to light, causing their relationship to falter.
Production History and Scale Expansion
*Haemongga* previously met audiences in November last year during a two-week tryout performance at Art Forest Hall 2. At the time, the production received positive reviews for its fresh subject matter, live music performances, and strong acting.
For this main run in Seoul, the storyline has been reinforced, and major musical numbers have been revised and polished to elevate overall quality. With the expansion in theatre scale, the production aims to heighten immersion through a new stage setup and directing.
