Visitors to Edinburgh can witness the ancient Scottish tradition of the Edinburgh Riding of the Marches on Sunday, 13 September 2026. The historic spectacle is free to watch along the city's iconic Royal Mile.

Centuries-Old Border Protection Tradition

The tradition dates back to the 16th century when Edinburgh residents inspected the town's boundaries, or 'burgh marches', to protect common lands against raiders. Historical records from 1584 note that locals were required to gather at the Lord Provost's house for the inspection or face fines. Regular ridings continued until 1718, followed by a long hiatus until 1946, when a special event was staged to mark the end of World War II and celebrate peace.

Grand Cavalcade and Street Procession

Today, the modern event features an extensive 26-mile route that culminates in a grand cavalcade down the cobbled Royal Mile. A total of 280 horses will ride up the famous street, led by Edinburgh's Lord Provost, pipe bands, and flag-bearers, attracting participants from around the globe.

Alongside the equestrian cavalcade, the day concludes with the People's Procession. Marching from Holyrood to St Giles' Cathedral, this display includes civic dignitaries, the Edinburgh High Constables, various community and civic organisations, dancers, and multiple music and pipe bands.
