Edinburgh Riding of the Marches and People’s Procession Returns This September
Experience one of Edinburgh's largest and most spectacular public events as the Edinburgh Riding of the Marches and People’s Procession takes place in the heart of the Scottish capital on 13th September 2026. This flagship annual celebration draws spectators and participants from across the globe to the historic Edinburgh Old Town.

Historical Background and Highlights
Rooted deeply in Scotland's historical Common Ridings, the magnificent cavalcade features 280 horses traversing the ancient Royal Mile. This grand procession serves as a vibrant re-enactment of the return of the Captain of the Trained Band—historically tasked with maintaining order within the city—bearing the tragic news of defeat at the Battle of Flodden in 1513.

Visitor Information
The main Event Arena is centrally located on the Royal Mile, focusing around the Mercat Cross on Parliament Square. It stretches from the foot of the Royal Mile near the Scottish Parliament and the Palace of Holyrood, concluding its journey at St Giles’ Cathedral where the cavalcade finishes.
