Want to see as much as possible without overspending? Kyoto is one of the best places in Japan to enjoy a trip on a budget. Historic buildings and traditional townscapes are everywhere, and while some temples and shrines charge admission, the approach roads, seasonal flowers and lively markets are all free to enjoy. Here are the 10 best free things to do in Kyoto.

1. Walking Through Old Japanese Towns

Kyoto is packed with preserved old houses, temples and shops, so even wandering without a set destination is a joy. Gion, in the Higashiyama ward, is one of the city's most attractive old districts, surrounded by historic sites such as Kodaiji Temple and Yasaka Shrine. Cafes and restaurants converted from old machiya line Hanamikoji Street, while Ninenzaka and Sanenzaka leading to Kiyomizudera feel like stepping back into the 9th century.

2. Temple Hopping

Kyoto has the largest number of temples and shrines in Japan, many of them national important cultural properties or World Heritage sites. Nishihonganji Temple is a Jodo Shinshu temple in Shimogyo ward, home to many national treasures and the breathtaking, ornately carved Karamon Gate. Daitokuji Temple, one of Kyoto's biggest Zen temples, is closely tied to Japanese tea culture; its Hojo-maeniwa garden is a designated Place of Special Beauty, but check opening dates before visiting.

3. Feeling Sacred in Shrines

Shimogamo Shrine is famous as a spiritual spot for beauty and love, with the vast Tadasunomori approach turning into a vivid green tunnel in summer. Kawai Shrine is a "beauty" spot where painting your face on an ema with cosmetics is said to make you beautiful inside and out. Fushimi Inari Shrine is renowned for its torii gates — now numbering around 10,000 — with walking through just the "Sembon Torii" taking about 15 minutes and the full climb to the top taking about an hour.

4. Relaxing in a Park with Seasonal Flowers

Umekoji Park in Shimogyo ward is about 15 minutes' walk from Kyoto Station and offers a huge lawn perfect for picnics. Cherry blossoms and plums bloom in spring, leafy streets offer shade in summer, maples turn red and yellow in autumn, and clear blue skies appear through the bare zelkova trees in winter.

5. Kyoto Imperial Palace & Kyoto Gyoen National Garden

Kyoto Imperial Palace was home to Japan's emperors from 1331 to 1869 and is now open to the public, featuring the Shishinden hall with its traditional cypress-bark roof and the Oikeniwa garden. Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, once a residence for court nobles, blooms with over 130 plum trees from mid-February to mid-March. Both can be visited free of charge.

6. Walking the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

Arashiyama is one of Kyoto's most popular areas, especially in autumn. A roughly 400-meter bamboo path runs from Nonomiya Shrine to Okochisanso Garden — the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. Thousands of tall bamboo stalks create a refreshing, mysterious atmosphere year-round as sunlight filters through the leaves.

7. Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design

This museum is completely free to enter. Kyoto has been the center of traditional Japanese culture for over 1,000 years, and the museum has preserved the city's traditional industries since 1977. Every weekend it holds free demonstrations by professional craftsmen, with featured crafts changing monthly, offering a hands-on look at centuries-old skills.

8. Strolling Through Nishiki Market

Loved by locals for over 400 years, Nishiki Market is known as the "Kitchen of Kyoto," lined with stalls selling Kyoto vegetables, fish, yuba (tofu skin) and more. Its red, yellow and green arcade is a photogenic SNS hotspot, and shop shutters feature paintings of the Edo-period master Ito Jakuchu — don't forget your camera.

9. Exploring the Philosopher's Path

The Philosopher's Path is a 2 km promenade running from Wakaoji Shrine to Ginkakuji Temple, named after the philosopher Nishida Kitaro who once walked it in thought. Famous for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, it passes Otoyo Shrine (renowned for camellias, with 250-year-old plum and cherry trees) and Nanzenji Temple, with retro shops and cafes along the way.

10. Maruyama Park — Kyoto's Oldest Park

Located in Higashiyama, Maruyama Park is Kyoto's oldest park and a top cherry blossom spot, with hundreds of trees blooming in early April around the symbolic "Night Cherry Blossoms of Gion" at its center. It is also a peaceful escape from the city and a short walk from Yasaka Shrine and Gion.

Wherever you wander in Kyoto, the streets are steeped in old Japanese culture, making a walk feel like time travel — no spending required. Just remember to stay hydrated, especially in summer!
