4 Hidden-Gem Fall Spots in Korea: Foliage Trails, a Lakeside Observatory and a Restored Wetland

As autumn colors deepen, the true essence of the season often lies in quieter landscapes rather than crowded headline attractions. On Nov. 5, the Korea Tourism Organization released a list of 27 "hidden gems" that shine especially bright in fall, featuring spots that are newly opened or not yet widely known. Here are four standouts from the list.

Seorak Fragrance Road: walking through fall scenery around Seoraksan

Seorak Fragrance Road in Sokcho, Gangwon-do, is a 2.7 km barrier-free path that runs along the entrance to Seoraksan National Park, with gentle slopes suited to strollers and wheelchairs alike. In autumn the trail is draped in colorful foliage, with highlights including panoramic views of Seoraksan from the 765 m Sky Walk and a gently swaying 98 m suspension bridge over the stream. Soft lighting after dark makes it a beloved spot for moonlight trekking.

Yedangho Observatory: a fall pause connecting sky and lake

Yedangho Lake is a signature attraction in Yesan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, drawing visitors with its wobbling chulleongdari footbridge, walking trails, monorail and interactive adventure facilities. The 70 m-tall Yedangho Observatory, which opened last month, commands sweeping views of the gentle ridges of Bongsusan and Daebongsan mountains rolling out beyond the still water. At sunset, sky and lake glow gold like a watercolor, while after dark the 402 m chulleongdari lights up with a romance all its own.

Ungok Ramsar Wetland: a landscape restored by nature

Ungok Ramsar Wetland in Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, stands as a model of hands-off natural restoration. When Ungok Reservoir was built in 1981, the local village vanished and the area stayed off-limits for 28 years — yet nature reclaimed the land on its own, and the wetland reappeared in 2009. An estimated 850 species now call it home, including endangered otters, leopard cats, martens, fairy pittas and grey frog hawks, plus Natural Monument-designated common kestrels. Entry is free, though select activities such as the guided tour train carry a fee.

Clayarch Gimhae Museum: where architecture and ceramics meet

Clayarch Gimhae Museum in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do, is Korea's first art museum devoted to architectural ceramics, composed of "dome" and "cubic" structures. Its showpiece is the 20 m-tall Clayarch Tower, clad in roughly 1,000 ceramic tiles. Blending spatial beauty with the season's colors, it is a prime stop for cultural travel in autumn.
