SaveHave you ever heard of a "sea of clouds" — unkai (雲海) in Japanese? It's an overcast layer of cloud formed by trade winds, with clouds and fog drifting across a wide area, mainly over mountains. It's a rare sight because it only appears when the weather conditions are just right.

In northern Japan, one of the best places to see it is Unkai Terrace. Part of the all-season Hoshino Resort Tomamu, it sits at an altitude of 1,088 meters in the Hidaka and Tokachi mountains of central Hokkaido. Though it belongs to the resort, non-hotel guests are welcome too.
Unkai Terrace is open from May to October, reached by a gondola that starts running from 4:30 in the morning. When conditions are good, several observation facilities offer a sweeping view of the sea of clouds — a cloud-shaped walkway, an observation spot, a hammock pool, and counter seats. There's also a shop and cafe serving cloud-themed food and souvenirs.
