Karaköy Lokantası: Ottoman Palace Cuisine and Meyhane Culture in Istanbul
One of Istanbul's most iconic restaurants and a popular lunch spot, Karaköy Lokantası is best known for its heavenly hünkar beğendi — a dish from Ottoman palace cuisine made with slow-cooked beef on a creamy bed of mashed eggplant. Come dinner time, the restaurant transforms into one of the city's finest meyhanes (traditional taverns), serving outstanding meze best enjoyed with a tall glass of rakı. The fava bean purée makes an excellent starter, while the grilled octopus is the standout main on the menu.
