France's first traditional Hindu mandir to open its doors in Seine-et-Marne
A new building is set to turn heads in Bussy-Saint-Georges. After several years of preparation and construction, the BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir de Paris is about to welcome its first visitors. Its claim to fame? It is presented as the first Hindu temple in France to be purpose-built according to the principles of traditional Hindu architecture. Its inauguration will be celebrated in September 2026.

The project is led by BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, an international Hindu socio-spiritual organisation. The word mandir, in Sanskrit, simply means a temple — a place where worshippers come to pray and pay homage to the deities.
One of the project's most distinctive features is its architecture. The building combines contemporary construction techniques with the codes of sacred Hindu architecture. Carved stones from India were used to create its decorations, and the project spans several thousand square metres.
The mandir will be dedicated to Bhagwan Swaminarayan as well as several deities of the Hindu tradition. But its purpose goes beyond religious practice: it is also intended to become a place of learning, encounters and discovery of Hindu culture, open to people of all faiths and origins.
The choice of Bussy-Saint-Georges is no accident. The temple joins the Esplanade des Religions et des Cultures, a district where several religious communities are gathered on a single site. Buddhist, Muslim and Jewish places of worship are already found there, while the Notre-Dame du Val church sits a few hundred metres away. The stated goal of this esplanade is to foster encounters, knowledge of different cultures and dialogue between communities. Beyond its role as a place of worship, this new temple should become another cultural address in Seine-et-Marne and allow people from the Île-de-France region to familiarise themselves with Hindu traditions, architecture and spirituality.
