The cost of living and travelling in Japan has been steadily climbing over the past year — from pricier taxi rides to higher visa fees for international visitors. Now, theme parks across the country are joining the trend, with operators pointing to surging operational and electricity expenses, along with efforts to ease overcrowding during peak periods.

According to the Japan Times, major attractions including Tokyo Disney Resort, Universal Studios Japan (USJ) and Sanrio Puroland are all set to raise admission fees in the coming months. They're far from alone — as of July, 32 out of 101 amusement parks surveyed nationwide had confirmed plans to increase prices this year. Most are adopting dynamic pricing, meaning ticket costs will fluctuate depending on the season or day of the week you choose to visit.

Tokyo Disney Resort — covering both Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea — will raise its one-day passport from ¥10,900 to ¥11,900 starting October 10, with a further increase to ¥12,400 from October 11. Sanrio Puroland already hiked its entry fee by ¥1,000 on August 1, bringing it to ¥6,900.

It's not just gate prices that are changing. Tokyo Disney Resort is expanding the number of attractions covered by its paid Disney Premier Access service, which lets guests reserve time slots for select rides and secure parade viewing areas — some of which will also see price increases. Meanwhile, Disney's free Priority Pass service, which allows visitors to book time slots for certain attractions, will be discontinued entirely by the end of August.

Over in Osaka, Universal Studios Japan will roll out its new dynamic pricing system from September 1, giving the park flexibility to adjust ticket prices based on expected crowd levels — including weekends and holidays — even after advance ticket sales have already begun.
