Korea Welcomes 10.71M Foreign Visitors in H1 2026 as US & European Markets Surge

A sharp rise in visitors from the Americas and Europe is reshaping South Korea's inbound tourism landscape, moving the country away from reliance on traditional source markets.

According to data released by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on August 6, Korea recorded 10.71 million foreign arrivals in the first half of 2026. Travelers from the Americas climbed 12.7% year-on-year to 1.08 million, while European arrivals soared 20.2% to 740,000. Combined with steady growth from Oceania and other regions, Korea's inbound tourism is becoming less concentrated and more globally diversified.

A major catalyst behind the American surge has been the introduction of new direct flight routes. Over the past year, Incheon International Airport launched connections to Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Canadian destinations, significantly improving accessibility for North American travelers.

On the European front, British carrier Virgin Atlantic commenced daily Incheon–London flights in March, driving a 22% year-on-year increase in UK visitors to Korea.

Hallyu-driven marketing has also played a pivotal role. A Korea tourism promotion booth set up during BTS's London concert drew approximately 50,000 visitors, underscoring the immense global appetite for Korean travel experiences.

Campaigns run through Korea's tourism promotion hubs across 12 emerging markets yielded impressive results, with several European nations posting notable first-half growth: Sweden up 57%, Poland up 33%, and Spain up 26%.

The ministry stated it will continue expanding the inbound tourism base through on-site marketing tied to major global events, develop differentiated travel products tailored to American visitor preferences, and further enhance traveler convenience.
