Tokyo Weather in August

Tokyo swelters in August, with daytime temperatures averaging around 29.6°C (85.3°F) and frequently climbing past 34.4°C (93.9°F). Nights offer little relief, hovering around 26.2°C (79.2°F) with high humidity. Dress in light, breathable clothing and carry water at all times to guard against heat exhaustion. The city also sees about 25.5mm of daily rainfall on average, with sudden downpours and occasional typhoons sweeping through in the late afternoons. Keep a folding umbrella handy and check the weather forecast before heading out. ※Based on 2025 meteorological data.

Popular Events, Festivals & Activities in August

Asagaya Tanabata Festival

Held in early August each year, the Asagaya Tanabata Festival is organized by the Asagaya Pearl Center shopping arcade just south of JR Asagaya Station. The 750-meter-long arcade transforms into a wonderland of bamboo decorations and meticulously crafted giant papier-mâché figures. With designs changing every year and attention to detail that borders on obsessive, this is a festival you'll want to return to annually.

Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival

Taking place at Meiji Jingu Gaien every August, the Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival pairs roughly 10,000 fireworks with live performances by chart-topping and up-and-coming artists. Drawing an estimated one million spectators across the venue and surrounding areas, the sight of thousands of fireworks illuminating the city sky is hands down one of Tokyo's quintessential summer experiences.

Fukagawa Hachiman Festival (Tomioka Hachimangu Grand Festival)

Centered around August 15 each year, the Fukagawa Hachiman Festival is one of Edo's great traditional festivals still alive today. The sight of participants hoisting towering portable shrines (mikoshi) through the streets is nothing short of spectacular. Dubbed the "water-throwing festival," spectators douse the mikoshi bearers with purifying water — and you're welcome to join in. This year, the main shrine's second mikoshi procession takes place on August 16.

Sumida River Lantern Floating

The Sumida River Lantern Floating ceremony creates an ethereal spectacle as glowing lanterns drift silently across the dark river surface — a cherished summer tradition of the Sumida River. From the Sumida River Waterfront Terrace near Azumabashi, participants release lanterns carrying wishes for peace onto the water. Lanterns can be purchased and personalized with your own message before floating them. As lanterns require advance booking, contact the Asakusa Tourism Federation or Sumida City Tourism Association if you'd like to take part.

Bon Odori in Tokyo

No Japanese summer festival is complete without Bon Odori, the traditional folk dance performed to welcome ancestral spirits. Typically held from mid to late August at shrines, parks, and community spaces across the country, each region has its own distinctive style. Tokyo offers an incredible variety of Bon Odori traditions to experience. Throw on a yukata (summer kimono) and join the circle — it's the quintessential Japanese summer experience.

Azabu-Juban Noryo Festival

For over 60 years, the Azabu-Juban shopping street has hosted this beloved summer festival. Beyond the creative food stalls run by historic establishments and trendy eateries, the event features a "Pride of Our Hometown" market showcasing specialty products from across Japan, traditional comedic storytelling (noryo rakugo), and live performances on the 10-BANG stage.

Koenji Awa Odori

The Koenji Awa Odori stands as one of Tokyo's most iconic summer festivals. Held over a weekend in late August, the event draws approximately 10,000 dancers and around one million spectators. The hypnotic blend of traditional music, synchronized dancing, and infectious energy makes this two-day celebration absolutely unforgettable.

Harajuku Omotesando Genki Festival Super Yosakoi

Where Kochi's centuries-old Yosakoi tradition collides with Harajuku and Omotesando's cutting-edge culture, the Harajuku Omotesando Genki Festival Super Yosakoi is the Tokyo metropolitan area's largest Yosakoi festival. Teams travel from Kochi, across Japan, and even from overseas to converge in the capital, delivering electrifying performances packed with energy and passion.

Asakusa Samba Carnival

Japan's biggest samba carnival and the perfect summer spectacle, the Asakusa Samba Carnival sees professional samba teams from across the country parade through the streets in dazzling costumes alongside elaborate floats. It's the ultimate stage for Japan's finest samba dancers to showcase their artistry — and an absolute riot of color, rhythm, and joy that you won't want to miss.
