Susukino's story began around 1870, during Hokkaido's pioneering era. What started as a modest outpost grew into the dining and nightlife powerhouse it is today. Come nightfall, the streets become a kaleidoscope of colour and energy — but summer brings an extra layer of magic.
During the Susukino Festival, the streets fill with the thunder of taiko drums and the graceful sight of oiran — courtesans in elaborate traditional kimono — parading through the crowds. It's a vibrant cultural spectacle set against one of Japan's most iconic neon backdrops. The festival is part of the broader Sapporo Summer Festival, which runs alongside the Odori Beer Garden (July 23–August 18), the Hokkaido Bon Odori (August 13–16) and the Tanuki Festival (July 23–August 18).
Come winter, Susukino reinvents itself again as part of the Sapporo Snow Festival with 'Susukino Ice World' — where intricate ice sculptures catch the neon reflections to create a crystalline wonderland.
